Adult Neuro Rehabilitation

Elevate Neuro Rehab offers occupational therapy and physiotherapy for young and older adults living with neurological conditions. We have a special interest in the rehabilitation of the neurologically affected arm and hand, as well as neuro-specific physiotherapy to help you achieve your mobility goals.

Each of our therapists has worked across the hospital inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation settings, as well as in the community; so, rest assured that no matter where you are on your rehab journey, our therapists have the empathy, experience and knowledge to support you along the way.

Our team are dedicated to keeping up to date with the latest evidence-based and innovative approaches in neuro rehab. We pride ourselves on being one of only a handful of clinics in Australia that offer services such as constraint induced movement therapy and transcranial direct current stimulation for the rehabilitation of the upper limb.

Upper Limb Rehab

Elevate Neuro Rehab has a special interest in delivering upper limb therapy programmes and our therapists are highly skilled and experienced in this area of rehab. We work alongside people with newly diagnosed neurological conditions, right through to people ten or twenty years into their rehab journey.

Depending on your specific needs, our therapists will use a selection of the below evidence-based methods (in conjunction with conventional therapy) in their approach to help you regain the use of your affected arm and hand.

Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT)

CIMT is a rehab method for regaining arm and hand function following neurological injury. It involves intensive training of the affected arm and hand for 2-6 hours per day, 5 days per week, for 2-3 weeks. We tailor the intensity of each programme to meet individual needs.

CIMT is internationally considered the gold standard in upper limb rehabilitation for stroke, brain injury and cerebral palsy and is Highly Recommended in the Australian Clinical Stroke Guidelines. To date, there has been no other rehab method researched as extensively and successfully as CIMT!

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)

Electrical stimulation is a proven method for retraining very weak or paralysed muscles by using an electrical current to stimulate muscle contraction and facilitate movement of the arm or hand. Electrical stimulation allows you to practice movements and tasks that would otherwise be impossible due to weakness – and with repetition this helps facilitate your brain to relearn these movements.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS)

tDCS is a non-invasive and safe brain stimulation technique used to modulate central nervous system (brain) excitability. It involves stimulation of the brain using a very weak electric current delivered by surface electrodes on the scalp, targeting specific areas of the cortex to facilitate new neural connections.

tDCS is an innovative approach and is still in its research phase for stroke recovery. At Elevate Neuro Rehab we are most interested in its effectiveness in upper limb recovery and managing spasticity.
