Course Content:

This course is intended for allied health professionals working in the neuro rehab space – whatever your level of experience! It will provide clinicians with a practical framework for utilising functional electrical stimulation to help individuals living with neurological conditions regain meaningful arm and hand function. Whether your new to electrical stimulation, or have been using it for years, this course is for you! Get updated with the latest evidence and learn how to use electrical stimulation in a task-specific, goal-directed way to optimise your patient/client outcomes. This course includes plenty of  demonstration/case study content and time for hands-on practice.

Learning Objectives:

  • Apply the principles of motor learning theory to neurological rehabilitation
  • Understand the importance of task-specific practice as an effective, evidence-based intervention for retraining arm and hand function
  • Identify the different types of electrical stimulation used in neuro rehab
  • Compare the evidence for cyclical versus functional electrical stimulation for retraining arm and hand function
  • Understand the effect of electrical stimulation on neuroplasticity
  • Learn how to prescribe appropriate parameters for a range of presentations
  • Learn the electrode placement for muscles of the upper limb, including for scapular mobility and stability, hemiplegic subluxation management, reaching, grasping and regaining fine motor skills
  • Apply learning with hands-on practice
