Intensive Therapy Programs
Discover the Power of Intensive Therapy
At Elevate Neuro Rehab, located in the heart of Sunshine Coast, Australia, we specialize in providing cutting-edge intensive therapy programs for individuals recovering from stroke, brain injury, or other neurological conditions. Our mission is to harness the wonders of neuroplasticity—the brain’s incredible ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections—and help our clients achieve life-changing improvements.
What is Intensive Therapy?
Intensive therapy in the context of neurorehabilitation involves a focused and rigorous approach to therapy. Unlike traditional models where therapy sessions might be once a week, intensive therapy programs are designed to provide multiple therapy sessions over a shorter period. This concentrated effort helps to maximize the brain’s ability to adapt and recover, offering a more dynamic and effective route to rehabilitation.
Intensive Therapy for Arm and Hand Rehabilitation
For individuals with neurological conditions, intensive upper limb therapy can be especially beneficial. Evidence based intenisve programs such as Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) is listed as a ‘strong recommendation’ by the National Stroke Guidelines for people who meet the criteria.
Our intensive programs incorporate several evidence-based interventions:
- Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT): CIMT involves restricting the use of the unaffected limb, whilst intensively training the affected arm and hand, in addition to commitment to behaviour change through a ‘transfer package’. This technique has been shown to significantly improve upper limb function by promoting neuroplasticity and motor recovery (Wolf et al., 2008).
- Bimanual Therapy: This approach focuses on tasks that require the use of both hands, helping to improve coordination and strength in the affected limb. Studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of bimanual therapy in enhancing functional outcomes in individuals with hemiparesis (Charles & Gordon, 2007).
- Electrical Stimulation: The use of electrical stimulation can enhance muscle activation and strength in the affected limb. Research indicates that electrical stimulation combined with task-specific practice can lead to significant improvements in motor function (Thorsen et al., 2013).
- Task-Specific Practice: Engaging in repetitive, goal-directed tasks helps to reinforce neural pathways and improve functional abilities. Task-specific practice has been identified as a crucial component of effective neurorehabilitation (Winstein et al., 2016).
Why Intensive Therapy?
For individuals with neurological conditions, the benefits of intensive therapy can be profound. By engaging in more frequent and repetitive tasks, the brain is encouraged to form new connections more rapidly. This accelerates the recovery process and improves overall function. Intensive therapy can also lead to quicker improvements, which can significantly enhance quality of life.
Our intensive programs are tailored to meet the unique needs of each client, ensuring that every session is maximally effective. Frequent sessions provide consistent support and motivation, helping clients stay committed and positive about their rehabilitation journey.
